Behind the Scenes: Sofia Coppola Directs La Traviata Opera, Rome


The American film director Sofia Coppola made her opera debut this year on May 24 with a production of Verdi’s masterpiece, La Traviata, at the Opera of Rome, a coup for the venue, which has been overshadowed by La Scala in Milan. Coppola joins forces with the fashion designer Valentino, who designed all the costumes, which have been compared to haute couture gowns.

The Rome Opera Foundation’s general manager, Carlo Fuortes, asked the direct to join the project after he watched her 2006 film Marie Antoinette and admired her ability to balance “the classic and the modern”. Opera of Rome has planned 15 performances from May 24 to June 30, 2016.
